About Us
Mathias Brick & Flint is a family-run business, established in 1995, built on over 50 years of experience, now employing the third generation of family experience. We specialise in the repair and restoration of historic brickwork and flintwork, as well as bespoke modern developments employing the traditional skills in building with flint.
We are experts in traditional building methods, materials and lime mortars, with extensive experience in conserving the original character of historic buildings. Often working closely with conservation officers and local authorities, and working within conservation areas, we are craftsmen in all aspects of brickwork and specialise in Tuck Pointing, Gauged Brickwork, Pointing, Flintwork, and lime mortars.
Our experience covers a broad spectrum of projects, ranging from small privately owned properties to listed buildings, churches, National Trust properties, historic royal residences and large country estates throughout the Home Counties and London.
We’re experts in Tuck Pointing, Gauged Brickwork, Pointing, Flintwork and Lime mortars.
About Lynn Mathias
Lynn started his building career in 1987, working with brick and flint from the start. This was followed by a City & Guilds qualification, before establishing the company in 1995, specialising in brink and flint conservation.
Lynn gained further certifications through the Weald & Downland Living Museum, specialising in flint, historic brick, wattle-and-daub construction, and Lime Mortar. This was followed by gaining a CPD in flint craft with the widely credited Flint Knapper John Lord.
As well as running Mathias Brick & Flint, Lynn has taken up several teaching positions to share his expertise in historic brick and flintwork. Lynn is presently Diploma Course Leader at West Dean College of Arts & Conservation, whilst supporting the SPAB Education & Training Committee brick courses, working parties and ‘Lime Days’.
