Mathias were appointed project lead on this Grade 1 listed restoration project, to repair areas of external brickwork and restore the condition of the original mortar. The original bricks dated back to the late Tudor / Jacobean period, requiring a comparable brick replacement to match the legacy build.
Large areas of the mortar had softened and decayed, again requiring some research into the period to find the right blend to match the period construction.

About The Friends Meeting House
The Friends Meeting House, on Railway Street Hertford, is believed to be the oldest Quaker building in the world, built in 1670 and seeing continuous use for worship ever since. The house was thrice-visited by the Quaker founder George Fox, until his death in 1691.
Like every purpose-built Quaker Meeting House, Hertford is an expression of extreme simplicity, equality, community, and peace. The design is always pared back, without any liturgical symbols, spires, steeple or any other architectural decorations. As George Fox defined in the founding tenets of Quakerism.
